A Cotton Bowl performance for the ages
Star-Gazette
Ernie Davis' performance in the 1960 Cotton Bowl earned him induction this year into the Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame.
Davis ran for one touchdown, caught a pass for another, caught two two-point conversion passes and had one interception (he played offense and defense) as Syracuse won the 24th Cotton Bowl 23-14 over Texas in Dallas to clinch the national championship.
It was that season's "dream game" pitting top-ranked and undefeated Syracuse against second-ranked and once-beaten Texas.
On the Orangemen's third play from scrimmage, Davis scored on a Cotton Bowl-record 87-yard touchdown pass play from Ger Schwedes. Davis then ran 4 yards for another TD and caught a pass for the two-point conversion, putting Syracuse up 15-0.
Texas scored on the opening drive of the second half, but on the Longhorns' next possession Davis intercepted a pass and returned it six yards to the Texas 24. After Schwedes ran three yards for a touchdown, Davis caught his second conversion pass and Syracuse led 23-7. Texas completed the scoring with a fourth-quarter touchdown.
